 Horse-Pirationals!

Those of us who own and ride horses are usually aware, on some level, that the connection between human and equine possesses a rare spiritual quality. More so than most animals, the horse's role is that of a true servant. It overcomes its own strong animal instincts to carry us into places, and to do things, from which it would ordinarily flee. Like any servant, the horse may be willing or reluctant, trustworthy or unreliable, interested more or less in his/her own welfare than in ours. . .and possess any other number of good or less desirable characteristics. Some of these attitudes and habits are a result of relationship and training, some are inborn - most result from various combinations of 'nature and nurture.'

The servant/master relationship between humans and equines reflects important aspects of the servant/Master relationship that we humans share with God, our Maker. The 'Horse-pirationals(tm)' in this section of the Gaits of Gold website are intended as food for spiritual thought. May God bless your meditation upon them as He leads you toward a more perfectly obedient, fruitful, and satisfying, relationship with Him.

Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Man PDF Print E-mail

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27

I’ve often marveled at how horses are a horseman’s peace, and generally become so in whatever form we need. Trail riding, raising foals, showing, jumping, racing, driving – there are literally hundreds of different equestrian disciplines, and types of horses. The discipline we choose to practice uniquely meets our individual desires and needs.

Loving Objectively PDF Print E-mail
Ever notice how common it is for a rider to click with one horse, or type of horse, and not appreciate or get along with another? People who like athletic, sensitive and reactive/responsive horses are frequently drawn to Arabians. Those who desire a more heavily muscled animal might gravitate toward Quarter Horses. There are people who love to drive a fast, hot horse. . .and those who prefer the stronger and more phlegmatic draft type for driving. As with human characteristics, the number and combination of equine traits is nearly impossible to calculate. All we usually know is that we ‘like this horse,’ and ‘wouldn’t want to own’ that one.

Passive Passenger, or Focused Rider? PDF Print E-mail

The owner of a Missouri Fox Trotter came to our barns for help. “All he’s ever done is a hard trot,” she said, shrugging her shoulders. “No one has been able to get him to fox trot. I seriously doubt he has any gait in him, or he surely would have expressed it by now."

Agreeing With God's Love PDF Print E-mail

It's amazing how much bad behavior devoted horse owners are willing to tolerate from their horses. I have seen cases where an animal is clearly dangerous and disrespectful, and yet the hapless owner makes countless excuses for the beastly behavior, and would walk over coals if it meant keeping it happy and healthy. The old truism that ‘love is blind’ seems particularly apt when describing such horse owners.
